Summary: While searching for their missing daughter, Gillian, Scully remembers that she has an another daughter, Katherine, who wants to stay with her. Mulder realizes that he could be the father of her child. Is he right? -------------------------------------- DISCOVERY OF THE LOST DAUGHTER Written by: Erin M. Blair -------------------------------------- Dana and Fox Mulder's Residence Annapolis, MD Monday, 9:30 a.m. Present Time Dana Scully-Mulder was looking at the photos of their fraternal twin daughters, Emily and Gillian, in the photo album. She lovingly touched the photo of Gillian. "We'll find you, Gillian..." Gillian was taken from them in the hospital for an unknown reason a few days after Scully gave birth to their twin daughters. Scully looked up to see her husband, Fox Mulder, as he hugged her from behind. "We have to find her," she whispered, turning around in his embrace to face her husband. "We'll find her, Scully," Mulder answered, assuringly. He caressed his wife's face. "I know we will..." Scully smiled at Mulder's use of her maiden name. Although they had been married for two years, they still often referred to each other that way. It's very easy to slip into an old habit. Scully saw a guilt-ridden expression on her husband's face, and she knew that he was blaming himself for what happened. She decided to use his first name to get his attention. "Fox?" "Dana?" "It's not your fault; what happened to Gillian. We'll find her. I know we will. Someday, we will see her again." "How?" "I have to keep thinking that there's a logical explanation as to why this happened," Scully said. She saw her husband smile. "What is it?" "I love how you said that, Scully. There has got to be an explanation. You said it to me on our first case in Oregon. Remember?" "I remember," Scully said, softly. "It turns me on," Mulder said with a smile. His hazel eyes gazed into his wife's blue eyes. "It turns you on?" Scully inquired with a laugh. "I must've really turned you on with all of my scientific theories..." "You did, Scully," Mulder answered. "You still do." "Do you think that this has anything to do with Antarctica?" "It shouldn't. I don't see how it could," Mulder replied. "I know we were worried about the alien vaccine I'd given you..." "Which I'm very grateful for you to save all our lives, but that's beside the point. We had them tested. It shouldn't have affected them," Scully said, with a sigh. "Maybe they thought that she had natural antibodies to the virus?" Mulder suggested. He rubbed his wife's back when he heard a click of the mailbox. "Is that the mail?" "I'll get it," Scully answered. Scully walked outside to get the mail. She gathered the letters, and noticed a creamy white envelope that had her name on it, "Dana Scully", in a red ink pen. She opened the door and walked inside. She opened the creamy white envelope, and she noticed that it was a letter from her brother, Bill, about her daughter, Katherine. "Katherine wants to see you, Dana. She wants to be with you," the letter said. "I'm going to bring her over in a week. Bill." She was so guilt ridden over the loss of Gillian, and this letter brought back the pain of another loss. She gave her daughter, Katherine, to her brother to raise temporarily because she felt she couldn't give her child all the time in the world. Memories flooded into her mind as she remembered Katherine's birth. "Someday, I'll tell her about her father. I should tell her now. She's going to start asking my brother's questions. I named her Katherine Dana so she'll remember who her mother is," she whispered. "I want her back." She heard her husband yell. "Any mail for me?" "Yes," Scully called out. "Fox, can you please come into the kitchen for a moment?" "What is it, Dana?" Mulder asked his wife, as he noticed her shocked expression. He saw his wife sitting down at the table looking at the creamy colored invitation. "You look as though you've seen a ghost." His wife led him to the living room, and he sat down beside her on the sofa. "What's wrong? "I received a letter in the mail today." "Is that why you look so pale?" Mulder asked. Scully nodded. "I never thought that it would hit me like this." "Like what?" "Every time that I see her name, I remember what I gave up." "Her?" Mulder frowned. He thought that she was thinking of her deceased sister. "Are you thinking about Melissa?" "No," Scully whispered. "I'm not. I was thinking about Katherine." "You mean Dana?" Mulder asked, thinking of their one year old daughter, Dana Katherine Mulder. "No, I mean Katherine Dana Scully." "Isn't she your brother's daughter? Your niece?" Mulder asked, as he saw his wife's guilty expression. His loop of logic came into high gear as he put two and two together. "She's your daughter." His wife nodded. "How come you never told me?" "I don't know. I thought that I didn't have to. I gave her to my brother to raise because I didn't think that I could handle being a single mother who worked long days and nights." "We do that now," Mulder replied. "Mulder, in case you forgot, we're married. I'm not a single mother. Besides, we aren't on a heavy case load," Scully commented. She sighed. "Things are different now. This was before we met. It was one evening after I went home from Quantico, and I met a man at a bar..." She drew a deep breath as she remembered his name. "His name was William.." "You had a one night stand?" Mulder asked, surprised. He wasn't *that* surprised of her rebellious streak. Scully had told him about the time when she was fourteen when she took her mother's cigarettes to smoke on the family's porch. Still, Mulder couldn't quite picture his wife as having a one night stand. It was unfathomable. It was uncharacteristic of her. He recalled an incident that made him rethink that. She did sleep with Ed Jerse. She denied it, but the case report filed by one of the detectives noted that Scully was in Ed's shirt when they had talked to her in his apartment. He was jealous. Jealous of Ed Jerse because he shared a part of Scully that he never would. That was a long time ago. True, he had never told Scully all of his disgressions. She knew about Phoebe Green. She knew about his brief marriage to Julianne Anderman. However, he had never told her about Kristen Kilar, the vampire, that he had sex with during the time when Scully was missing. He regretted having sex with Kristen. He thought about Scully the whole time. He had missed her so much. He wanted Scully then, not Kristen. Nor did he tell Scully about his sexual encounter with a woman with long, auburn hair. He had met during the time when Julianne dumped him for a career in acting. It was just a one night stand, but it was very special. She brought out a side of him that he never would have again; how to love a woman again. He hadn't felt this in a long time until... Until Scully knocked on the basement door, and walked into his life. She reminded him of the beautiful young woman with auburn hair that he had met at the bar. He remembered thinking that it wasn't her. The woman was named Danielle, not Dana. It couldn't be her... "Yes," Scully replied. Mulder was startled for a second as he thought that she was answering his unaired question, but then he remembered that she answered his earlier, oral question. "What's that, Scully?" "I was answering your question, Mulder. Yes, I had sex." "I had never thought that you..." "You know how rebellious I was, Mulder. You know that," Scully said, with a small smile. "It was very uncharacteristic of me, but it was very..." "Exhilarating?" Mulder suggested. Scully nodded. "Why yes, it was exhilarating. It was a risk, but I never regretted my actions. However, I do regret missing the time that I could have spent with Katherine. I shouldn't have given her up to my brother." "Why don't you tell me what happened, Dana?" Mulder asked, tenderly stroking his wife's back. He saw his wife smile. "I think that I better," Scully replied, and her smile faded as she recalled what happened nine years ago. FBI Academy Dana Scully's Office Quantico, VA Monday, 5:00 p.m. Nine Years Earlier "Hi Dana. A couple of girls and I are going to DC for a night on the town. Want to come?" Agent Natalie Reynolds asked, as she peeked into Scully's door. Scully thought, as she put the papers in her desk. "Where in DC?" "Casey's Bar. I hear a lot of agents like to go there for a drink. You aren't dating Jack anymore so..." Scully sighed at the mention of her former lover, Jack Willis. She wasn't sad that they had broken it off, as it was for the best. "I know." She hadn't met anyone that would turn her heart on fire. "Sure, I'll go." She grabbed her purse, and locked her office door. Casey's Bar Washington DC Monday, 5:30 p.m. Nine Years Earlier Scully walked into the bar with her fellow agents. They were enjoying themselves after a long day at work, and they needed to wind down. Scully's eyes gazed upon a dark haired man sitting at the bar. "May I sit here?" "Sure, go ahead," the man replied. He was fingering his wedding ring as he was thinking of those divorce papers. His marriage wasn't working out to Julianne Anderman, a fellow FBI agent. "Are you married?" Scully asked, as she noticed him fingering the wedding ring. "For the moment," the man answered. He looked at the ring and not at the woman sitting beside him. "Actually, I'm in the process of divorce proceedings." "I'm sorry to hear that," Scully said, with a sigh. "My wife and I have been arguing over little things," the man answered. He drew a deep breath, and continued. "She doesn't want me to talk about the paranormal around her." Scully thought. "What about the paranormal?" "I believe my sister was abducted by aliens," the man replied. He glanced over at Scully, seeming to look for some kind of reaction, and she nodded sympathetically. "I'm sorry," Scully answered. "It must have been horrible for you." "It was," the man replied. He looked at the table with a sigh. "She hasn't returned." He paused. "I hardly tell anyone about my troubles." He took a deep breath, and then he added, "However, I feel some sort of connection to you." "I feel the same way," Scully smiled. "What's your name? Scully thought for a second, and decided to use a different form of her first name. She wanted to shake her predictable image. "Danielle. Usually, I don't do this... Would you like to go somewhere with me for dinner?" "I don't see anything wrong with that," the man answered. He paused. "Oh, by the way, my name is William." "I like the name," Scully smiled. "My father's name is William as well as my brother." "What a coincidence! My father's name is William," William commented. "Must be fate," Scully answered, as she watched him get up from the stool to walk out with her. She could hear her fellow agents talking about her, but she didn't care. Dana Scully's Apartment Annapolis, MD Monday, 7:00 p.m. Nine Years Earlier Scully led William into her apartment after they had a dimly lit dinner at a fine restaurant. They talked about their careers at the FBI, and they felt a connection. thought Scully, as she gazed into his hazel eyes. "You have a nice place," William replied. He looked at Scully with a shy smile. "Thank you, William." Scully led him to her bedroom. "Why it's so dark in here?" William asked. "I need new light bulbs," Scully answered, as she remembered what she forgot to buy at the store. "It's one of those things that I forgot to put on my shopping list." "You forgot something like light bulbs?" William asked, smiling. "Wow." Scully decided to change the subject. "I don't want this night to end. I haven't felt this alive for a long time." "Are you sure you want this? We hardly know each other," William protested, as he saw Scully unbuttoning her blouse. "I want you, William. I want you to make love to me," Scully replied. She saw him nod, and he walked a little closer to her to unbutton her blouse and take off her clothes. Her blue-green eyes twinkled with a tender expression as she took off his clothes. Everything came off. He cupped her face, and their lips touched for a kiss. After the kiss broke off, he stroked her face, then her auburn hair, and finally her body. He couldn't hold back anymore so he made passionate love to her. They were both unaware that he impregnated her, and that, they would reunite two years later, as partners. They hadn't realized how intimate that moment had actually been. Five years later, they still hadn't found the truth of the one night of passion so many years ago. Until the letter addressed to Scully came into their lives. Dana and Fox Mulder's Residence Annapolis, MD Monday, 9:50 a.m. Present Time "You gave a fake name, Dana?" Mulder asked his wife, who nodded. "How come?" "I wanted to be mysterious, Fox. I was getting tired of that ice queen image," Scully sighed. "What ice queen image?" Mulder asked. "I don't think that you have one." "I do," Scully answered. "When I was at Quantico, I was known as an ice queen because I was very predictable. They thought that I was cool as a cucumber. So I decided to live for the moment." "So you hopped in bed with him?" Mulder asked, feeling jealousy towards a man who fathered *his* wife's child. "Yes," Scully replied. "I had sex with him." She saw her husband's jealous look. "You have nothing to be worried about, Mulder. You have me forever. If it was meant to be for William and I, we would be together right now." "I know that, Scully." He paused. "What you don't realize is that I could be the one who fathered your child," Mulder answered. He saw his wife's shocked expression. "How can that be? His name was William. His hair was straighter... His eyes were innocent looking... He wore glasses." "That was before I started to using hairstyling gel," Mulder said. He smiled at his wife who was still shocked. "You know that my middle name is William, and I do wear glasses only if I'm reading something." He paused. "And you know how much I hate my first name. The only time that I like my name is when you said it." "I don't understand..." "Let me explain. I was there at the same bar. I was depressed over Julianne, and I had met a woman that night who blew me away. In fact, you still blow me away with your love." "That means Katherine is ours," Scully replied, as she gazed into her husband's hazel eyes. "She could be, Dana. We don't know for sure. However, I do think that I could be Katherine's father." Dana Scully's Apartment Annapolis, MD Monday, 8:00 a.m. One Month Later Nine Years Earlier "I can't be pregnant... I don't even know who the father is. Let me rephrase that. I do know who the father is, but I haven't heard from him," Scully whispered, as she stared at the positive result of her home pregnancy test in shock. She was in her bathroom after she threw up from nausea. She hadn't been feeling well for the past few weeks so she decided to take a pregnancy test. Scully knew that she had all the symptoms that told her that she was pregnant as she memorized the warning signs for pregnancy. The morning sickness. The various changes that a women goes through when her body is blessed with child. "I'm pregnant," she whispered, as she looked at herself in the mirror. Scully knew who the father could be... It was the result of the one night stand that she shared with William. She hadn't heard from him since their night of passion. "I don't even know how to reach him..." She was pregnant with his child. The only question remaining was how she was going to have a career in the FBI while she was expecting. "What am I going to do?" Aborting this child was out of the question because of her Catholic upbringing. She would never harm nor kill an innocent child. Someday when she was ready, she wanted to raise a family. She thought of her options. She could, with help, raise her child. Although it would be hard for the baby and herself, it could be done. The hardest part would be when he or she asked about who the father is. She wouldn't know what to tell her/him. "I couldn't give you that life," Scully whispered. "I know that I already love you.. It wouldn't be fair to us if I don't give you the attention that you deserve." She walked out of the bathroom towards her bedroom. She recalled the sweet memories of her making love with William as she realized that they had made a child. "If only I could tell you, William," Scully sighed, as she sat down on her bed while stroking the tummy. "I wonder what your reaction would be that you're going to be a Daddy." Dana and Fox Mulder's Residence Annapolis, MD A Week Later Monday, 8:00 a.m. Present Time "Mulder?" "What time is it, Scully?" Mulder asked, sleepily. He turned himself facing the clock by the bedside table. "It's eight o'clock!" He jolted up, and looked at his wife. "How come you didn't wake me up?" He noticed that his wife was already dressed in her blue suit. "You were having a good night sleep that I didn't want to disturb you. You know how hard I tried for you to get a decent nights' sleep?" "I know," Mulder said, with a sigh. He paused. He remembered that today was special for his wife. "Isn't it today that your brother is coming by for a visit?" "Yes, it is," Scully answered. "Bill is bringing Katherine." "I know." "Fox, I'm nervous. It's been awhile since I last saw my own daughter," Scully said, with a worried expression. "I don't know what's going to happen." "I have never seen you this nervous before..." "I know it's not like me to feel this way, but I can't help it." "I'm sure that everything will be fine, Scully," Mulder replied, as he got up from the bed. "Scully, you wouldn't be human if you didn't feel nervous about seeing Katherine." "I know. I hope that everything will work out," Scully said, with a sigh. She changed the subject. "Let's get some breakfast. Ok?" "Sure," Mulder said, with a smile. His smile turned into a look of concern for Scully. He walked into the kitchen to see his wife. He took her in his arms as she was fixing breakfast. "Scully, would a paternity test solve this anxiety?" Scully was shocked to hear what Mulder had suggested. "What do you mean?" "A paternity test would solve the issue of who fathered Katherine," Mulder answered. He stroked his wife's back, and it helped her to relax. "Last night when you told me about Katherine, I could tell you that you think that you betrayed me. Scully, what had happened to you was before we met. You didn't betrayed me, Scully. I want you to know that." He was still guilty over what he had done during that time. "Thank you," Scully said, as she gazed into her husband's hazel eyes. "You don't know how much this means to me." "I understand," Mulder sighed. The memory of him having sex with Kristen flashed in his mind. "When Katherine arrives, we will talk to her about the paternity test. I'm sure that she would like to know as well," Scully replied, as she placed the food on the table. She glanced at her husband, and noticed that there was something troubling him. "Is there something wrong?" She prodded. "You look as though you're keeping something from me. What is it?" "There's something that I need to tell you. Something that happened when you were gone---" Scully interrupted Mulder by putting her index finger on his mouth. "That was a long time ago. It's in the past, Fox." "I need for you to know, Dana. I kept this so hidden that I think that I should tell you..." "What is it?" Mulder drew a deep breath, and continued. "When I was in Los Angeles shortly after you were missing, I decided to work on a case. Something told me that you wanted me to move on with my life..." "I would have told you that," Scully said, with a sad smile. "I know how much the X-Files means to you." She knew that there was something more than that. "What is it?" "I missed you so much, Scully," Mulder said, as he reverted back to that time. "I felt that the world had come to an end. Without you, I'm nothing. It was the first time that I realized what would happen if I lost you." He looked into her blue-green eyes and he saw a look of understanding. "I met a woman, Kristen Kilar, who felt the same way as I had. Lost. Numb. We had sex." "You had sex with her?" Scully asked, shocked. "How come you never told me this?" "I felt like I had betrayed you. When I was having sex with her, all I could think about was you." "Me?" "Yes," Mulder said, as he fingered the shape of his wife's jaw line. "You mean the whole world to me." He paused. "I wanted you then, and I want you now." "I understand," Scully replied. She stroked her husband's face. "I understand." She heard the door bell ring, and she went towards the door to answer it. Mulder followed her. She opened the door, and saw a little girl with long, auburn hair and hazel eyes with her brother, Bill. "Hi Bill." She said, as she smiled at Bill and Katherine. "Hi Katherine." She took her daughter's hand, and led them to the living room. "Hi Mommy," Katherine said, shyly. She looked at her mother, and then, at Mulder with her shy, innocent eyes. "I thought that you should raise her now," Bill said, thoughtfully. "I thought that it would be temporary, Dana. It lasted longer than you thought at the time." "I know. I was gone so much," Scully replied. She bent down to ruffle her daughter's auburn hair. "You're going to stay with us from now on." "Ok," Katherine replied. "She's shy," Scully whispered to Mulder. "Katherine has never seen you before." "She looks so much like you, Dana," Mulder replied, and he noticed that she has the same hazel eyes as himself. "I know." "Dana, I want you to know that I'm not overly fond of your husband," Bill said, with a sigh. "I know that both of you are very good parents." He faced Mulder. "I hope that you can be a good father to Katherine." "I will, Bill. Don't worry," Mulder answered. He watched Bill hug Scully, and then a quick hug to Katherine as he left. They were alone with little Katherine. Mulder smiled at Katherine. He knew that she was scared at being at a strange house, and he wanted her to get settled in. "Why don't we go upstairs and show her the bedroom?" "I think that's a good idea, Fox," Scully replied, as she took her daughter's hand. She noticed that her daughter looked at her with a sad smile. "Katherine, what's wrong?" "I know you're my Mommy, but who's my Daddy?" Katherine asked. "Uncle Bill won't tell me." "You will know, Katherine. By the time you have your birthday next week, you will know who your Daddy is," Scully said, confidantly. She stroked her daughter's auburn hair, and she leaned to whisper in her husband's ear. "I want you to take the paternity test." "And you'll do the results, right?" "Yes, I will," Scully replied.
