Waiting for You

Scully sat at Mulder's bedside after he had been given the 
antivirals. She saw his beautiful hazel eyes opening 
and she knew he was looking at her for the first time 
in months. 

"Who are you?"

"Don't do this to me. Do you know what we've been
through?" 

"Only what I see in your face," Mulder said. "Anybody
miss me?"

Scully cried.  "Yes."

"I missed you too."

"There's something you need to know, Mulder," Scully said 
gently.

"What?"

"We're having a baby, Mulder."

A smile appeared on Mulder's face. "It's what I dreamed
of for us."

"I know. The IVF didn't work, Mulder."

"We created a miracle," Mulder said. He paused for 
a moment. "When did you find out?"

"The very day you were --" 

"Scully, I'm so sorry. If only had I known..."

"I have been waiting for you all this time. I'm so glad
you're alive."

"I'm glad that Skinner got me off the life support,"
Mulder said. It was clear from his expression that he 
was taking this like an every day occurence on the 
X-Files. "I could easily have suffered from 
whatever happened to Billy Miles." 

"How did you find out?" Scully asked gently.

"Skinner came in to see me before you came in,"
Mulder said.

"You would have changed into...something else."

Mulder nodded. "I shouldn't have gone, Scully."

"I know. You're here with me, Mulder. That's all
that matters."

"I'm not sure what my place will be...since you have 
a new partner," Mulder said. 

"I guess Agent Doggett stopped by to see you,
Mulder."

Mulder nodded again. "Yes, he did."

"Mulder..."

"I know I wasn't there..."

"Mulder, you will always be my partner. *Always.* You
are my partner in every sense of the word. Your place 
will always be with me," Scully said. "Agent Doggett
has been good to me, but he knows that's temporary 
until you're back on your feet again. I will make sure that
we start the paperwork to get you reinstated in a couple
of weeks." 

"That's good to know, Scully. I missed you so much,"
Mulder said. 

"Now I understand what you went through when I was
abducted, Mulder."

"I hope we never have to go through this ever again,"
Mulder said. Tears welled in his eyes as he gazed 
into hers. This unborn baby was what he had wanted for 
them."Thanks for telling me about our baby.
It means a lot to me. We were hoping for a miracle
when I was...abducted. And now...we're getting 
what I always wanted for us...a child."

"You're welcome. I wish that I could have done
more to save you."

"I know the pain you've been through, Scully. I doubt
there's anything you could have done but wait. Waiting
was the hardest part when you were gone," Mulder said.

"I know, Mulder, but the wait was worth it. Waiting for
you was like waiting to unwrap presents on Christmas.
You're the best present that I ever received. Don't ever
forget it."

"I won't, Scully." He gave her a tender smile as they
both settled in silence filled with the both of them.
