Can love survive? -------------------------------------------- A NEW LIFE (2/2) Written by: Erin M. Blair -------------------------------------------- Danielle Scully's Apartment Alexandria, VA March 26, 1998 9:30 a.m. Danielle awoke to hear her phone ring, and she opened up her blue eyes to focus on the telephone. She turned on her side to pick up the phone. "Danielle." "Danielle, it's Mulder." Danielle detected a pang of sadness in his voice. "Is there anything wrong?" "Nothing's wrong, Danielle. It's just...It's just that I found her, but I'm not sure if it's really her." "You found Dana?" Danielle inquired. She could feel her heart quicken, and she knew what Mulder had found out was a complete, utter lie. Mulder sighed. "Yes. She told me not to trust you. If she's your cousin, why would she say that?" "I don't know. Maybe she thinks we had a falling out, Mulder? I know we didn't. You've got to trust me." "I don't know if I could." Danielle's blue eyes became misty with tears and she couldn't have said anything more, but this: "Then there's nothing more to be said." * * * Danielle walked towards the bench at the Lincoln Memorial which she used to share with someone in earlier, happier days. She was crying, and she didn't notice a man approach her. "I'm sorry for the intrusion but you look as though you needed a friend," said the man as he sat down beside her. "I've seen you several times during the past few months. Sometimes you're in a good mood but today..." Danielle didn't look up. She wasn't in the mood for conversation, especially with him. *Why can't you just leave me alone?* "Go away." "I'm sorry, but I can't leave because I'm involved now." "Why do you care?" "I'd seen you around here. In fact, I usually come to this bench just to think about things. And to draw." He paused. "You're the first person I told." "How touching," Danielle said with sarcasm. "Who're you?" "David," he said with a smile. He noticed that she hadn't looked at him yet, and he wondered what her reaction would be if she saw him. He knew who she really was, but wanted her to admit her true name. "And you're?" "Danielle Scully." "Like hell you are," David said with a growl. Danielle sighed. She didn't really know who he was, but he was getting to her. "Why do you say that? I'm not Dana Scully." She bit her lip nervously as she didn't want to tell anyone her secret. "She's still alive and...I'm *not* her." "Yes, you *are* Dana Scully," David said, interrupting gently. "Why are you pretending to be someone you're not?" Danielle wiped her tears with a tissue from her purse, but it was useless. She couldn't stop the tears flowing down her cheeks. The pain was unbearable, but she had to tell someone. "I was told to be Danielle instead of Dana. I can't go back to my real life. Someone else has my real identity and has already told someone that she's me. I doubt I can ever go back." She paused. "This someone's my partner. At the moment, he hates me. He doesn't even trust me. I can't go back to my old life at all." David winced at the sadness he'd heard from her voice. *I know who that 'someone' is.* "Yes, you can and I'll help you." "How? How can you help me? You don't know what happened to me. And besides, I can't go back. Ever. They'll do the tests to me." "No, they won't. I'll do everything to protect you." "Who *are* you?" Danielle asked, intrigued. She didn't really care who it was, but he sounded familiar to her. *Why?* "I said my name's David." "I know your first name, but not the last name." "It doesn't matter. In fact, I don't want you to know, but I'm here for you." She looked away from him, and looked at the water. "I don't trust anyone." "Trust me." "Why should I?" "Like I said to you, I'm here to help you. As a friend," David said with a sigh. *What happened to you, Dana?* "I don't want to hear this..." "You have to. Who did this to you, Dana?" "Don't call me Dana." David sighed. "Whatever. I understand how you feel. When she was taken several years ago, I thought I'd never see my partner again. She was my lover, and she was expecting my child." He paused. "She was a few months pregnant when *they* got her. When she was returned, she never said anything of our love and our baby." "She was replaced by a genetic clone," Danielle finished. "I was too." "I know how you feel, Danielle. I had to change my identity to protect you." "Why me?" "I think you know," David said with a soft smile. "I don't trust you." "You've got to trust me. We're both in this together," David said with determination. "I'm not going to let you go now that I've finally found you." "Finally found me?" Danielle repeated. "I...I don't understand." David lifted Danielle's chin to face him, and he gazed into her blue eyes. "Your name's Dana Katherine Scully, and do you know who I am?" "Mulder," she said. "I don't understand." "You keep saying that," Mulder said with a laugh. As his hazel eyes gazed at her, he wanted her to know who he really was. "Do you trust me?" "I don't know." Mulder sighed. "I don't know why I even said that to you..." "You don't trust me. How can I work with you? You act like such a jerk sometimes." "I was being a jerk, Scully. You know me." With a pang of bitterness in her stomach, Scully nodded. "I know." She paused. "What about her? The new source." "I realized she was a fake. There were some things she didn't know about. I quizzed her on our earlier relationship. The cases with Tooms, and she didn't remember any of it. That - and the fact the PCRs I had Danny run through the FBI labs revealed you *are* the real Dana Scully." He paused. "Do you remember the movie 'Titanic'?" "What?" "That scene where Rose met Jack after he saved her life?" Scully nodded. "I know what you mean. I love that scene. I thought you told me it was a total sappy movie." She remembered them watching the DVD of 'Titanic' the other day at his apartment. "I know what I said. In a way, I saved your life tonight. What would have happened to you, Dana, if I hadn't walked by?" "I don't know," Scully said, ignoring the fact he called her by her real name. She felt his hand stroking her face, and then, down to her arms. "Dana?" "Yes?" Mulder drew a deep breath before asking the question he most wanted answered. "Scully, what happened to our baby?" "She's still with me as my child. Only she thinks my name's Danielle Scully." "We have a little girl?" Scully nodded. "Yes." She paused, and then continued. "Her name's Kaitlin Rose. I'd never told her anything about her father - you. I didn't want her hopes to go sky high." Mulder closed his eyes as he was trying to imagine their little girl. A picture of a young girl floated in his mind with curly, auburn hair and hazel eyes. She had a creamy complexion, and her hands were dainty. Little Kaitlin Rose was a happy, delightful child as she played with her mother. Then he opened them to face her. "Does she have my eyes?" "Yes, she does. She has my hair color - auburn - and her hair was like mine when I was her age." "What was your hair like?" "It was curly," Scully said, as she gave him a warm, caring smile. "It was hard to fasten it with a barrette. Luckily, for me, it's not that curly anymore." "I want to see her, Scully." Scully nodded. "You will." She closed her eyes briefly as she remembered telling Mulder about her pregnancy. X-Files Basement Office February 20, 1994 "Mulder?" Mulder looked up at Scully in the doorway, and he grew concerned as she sat down at her chair. "I was beginning to get worried..." "I'm so sorry, Mulder. I should have called to let you know how late I was going to be, but I needed to be sure." She gave him a warm, tender smile. "I'm pregnant." "You're having my child?" Mulder asked, as he got up from his desk. Scully's eyes were misty with complete joy. "The baby was conceived last month so the baby will be born in September." "I'm so happy, Scully," Mulder said, as he gave her a hug. "What will happen to the X-Files?" Scully sighed. She hadn't thought all the pros and the cons about having a baby would affect the X-Files. "I don't know. I haven't thought about it, but I don't see how it could affect our partnership." She paused. "Let's see what happens." Mulder nodded. "I hope we won't be separated." "It won't be until my seventh month or so," said Scully, with a small frown. "If we're separated, it's only temporary." "We're going to have to get married, you know." "I know," Scully said, softly, "but we'll have plenty of time to discuss our wedding." "You never know..." "I *do* know, Mulder." * * * Lincoln Memorial March 26, 1998 "What were you thinking of?" Scully opened her eyes as she focused on Mulder. "I remembered when I told you that I was pregnant with Kaitlin." "We were planning to get married as soon as the baby was born." Scully remembered. She remembered their promise to get married, but it never happened. *Never say never, Dana.* "I know, but it's too late. We've lost so much time together." "It's true. We have lost time, but I still want you to be my wife, Dana. Will you marry me?" Mulder asked. He watched her eyes glisten as she nodded. "Yes, I will marry you," Scully said. She gave him a warm smile. "I guess I'll be Danielle Mulder." "No, not Danielle. You're going to be Dana Mulder." "I don't think it's a good idea, Mulder. They told me they'll do all the tests they run on my genetic clone if I were to return to my life as Dana Scully." "They won't." "How do you know?" "Scully, the members who did everything to the clone are dead. Well, except for Black-Lunged-Smoking-Son-Of-A-Bitch, they're all dead. Nothing's going to happen to you. I'll make sure of it. I know I promised I'll protect you, but this time I'll make good on my word. Please trust me..." "I trust you," Scully said. "And I'll return to my life as Dana Scully." Mulder smiled. "I'm glad, Dana." "I do have a question. Who's Diana Fowley?" inquired Scully. She gave a confused glance at Mulder, who sighed. "You don't want to tell me - do you?" "It's not that, Dana." "Then how come you can't tell me, Mulder?" "She was my ex-partner," replied Mulder, slowly. "It's all in the past, Dana." "Why are you calling me 'Dana' - you always called me 'Scully' even when we made love?" inquired Scully. She saw him sigh. "What's wrong?" "That was really stupid of me," commented Mulder. "I shouldn't have done that." "But you did." Mulder sighed. "I realize that, Dana. I think you'd agree that calling you 'Scully' would bring back bad memories for me." "That never stopped you before." "I know," replied Mulder. "It's just that I want to call you, Dana. It's your rightful name and I want you to know your real identity." Scully nodded. She understood what Mulder was trying to tell her. She really was Dana Scully, not Danielle Scully. The people who were behind her abduction don't really care about her. It was more than that, she completely understand why he was calling her 'Dana' - he was giving a beautiful gift. Her identity. Her old life. Her family. She doesn't need to hide in fear of having those awful tests done to her. Scully realized how she didn't need to fear anymore. And most importantly, her future as Mulder's wife and for them to raise Kaitlin. Scully wrapped her arms around Mulder's shoulder and whispered into his ear. "Thank you, Mulder." "What for?" "For giving me back my life as Dana Scully." "Don't you mean Dana Scully-Mulder?" asked Mulder. Scully nodded. "Yes, I do." She paused. She knew what was on his mind. "I know you want to see Kaitlin." "How did you know?" "You read like a book, Mulder." Mulder laughed. "No, I don't." Then his hazel eyes became serious. "Will I see her?" "I don't see why not," said Scully. "I'm sure she wants to see you too." "Don't you have to prepare me for her?" Scully nodded. "I think she'll be all right with it. She always wanted to know about her father." * * * Margaret Scully's House Baltimore, MD "Fox, Dana - are you here for Kaitlin?" Scully nodded. "Yes, Mom. Thanks for letting her stay here." Margaret went to the little girl in the playpen and held her in the arms. "You're very welcome. Kaitlin's going to look like you when she grows up." She paused. "Fox, you know Dana's alive?" Mulder nodded. "I just found out. I can understand how hard it must have been for you." "It was hard for me, Fox, but I'm thankful Dana's alive." Margaret paused. "Dana, I'm sure you have a lot to catch up on." Scully nodded. "Yeah, we do. I have six years of X-Files cases to catch up on. I just hope the other Dana made good notes." She gave Mulder and her mother a warm smile. She went over to her mother to hold her daughter. "Kaitlin, this is your father, Fox Mulder." Kaitlin's hazel eyes looked at her father and her face lighted up with a big smile. Then the little girl climbed into her father's lap. "Hi Daddy." "See? I knew she'll like you," said Scully. She gazed into Mulder's eyes and she knew everything would be wonderful between them. "Mulder, want to hold her? I want to talk to Mom in the kitchen." Mulder nodded with emotion. "She's the most precious thing I'd ever seen." Scully followed her mother in the kitchen. She gave her mother a quick hug. "What's this for?" "I don't know. I thought I would be Danielle Scully for the rest of my life, but now I'm back as Dana Scully-Mulder." "Did you marry when I wasn't looking, Dana?" "Mom, Mulder and I going to get married." Margaret smiled at her daughter. "I'm very happy for all three of you." She paused. "Dana, there's something I need to ask you about?" "What about?" "The other Dana told me a while ago that she couldn't have children. I was wondering if you can or can't." Scully drew a deep breath. "Mom, I can have children. *Nothing* was done to me when I was abducted - only to the other Dana. I have a feeling that Kaitlin will have some sisters and brothers eventually." "Has Fox told you about Emily?" "I know Emily's the other Dana's daughter, Mom. I wish I could feel something towards her but I'd never met her. I don't know what she was like or how the other me dealt with the pain of losing her." "She was very devastated, Dana, to lose the only daughter she'd ever have. Imagine how I felt when I lost Melissa." "I wish I'd seen Missy before she died," said Scully. She wiped the tears which were threatening to fall with her hand. "I wish I was never abducted." Margaret pulled her daughter for an embrace and rocked her daughter. "Me too." They walked into the living room where Mulder was getting to know Kaitlin. Scully sat down beside him and smiled at the reunion. "I love you, Mulder." "What brought that on?" "I'm just watching you with Kaitlin and you don't know how happy I am." "I know you've made me the happiest man on Earth, Scully." Mulder paused. "I love you too." End of Story End of Part Two of Two Author's Notes: This idea came into my head via a dream. I guess I had always wanted to write my own theory about Scully's abduction. It excited me so much I'd wanted to write this story. Here's how I came up with the name for Kaitlin Rose Scully. All through out writing this story, I knew the real Dana Scully (AKA Danielle) was going to have a daughter by Mulder. I had used Dana and Katherine so many times that I wanted to try something new. I picked up a baby name book and found the perfect name for her little girl: Kaitlin Rose. Just to let you know there's a sequel in the works called "A New Life II." Dedications: I dedicate this story to my brother, Mark, who'd introduced me to X-Files in the first place. I also dedicate this story to the following people: Lisa, Joey R., Tanya Voet, Arianne B., and Carol G. for their support and dedication to my fanfic. All of you had helped to become a better writer and person. Thank you. Thanks for Carol G. for beta reading. Special Dedication: To Gillian Anderson, who portrays Dana Scully so well. In fact, she was my source of inspiration while I was writing this fanfic. Feedback: Much appreciated and very welcomed! Flames would be used to line my cat, Mischief's litter box and will laugh at your expense. As Mulder said in "Arcadia": "Bring it on!" Send to: eblair@sonic.net
